Faculties and Students of Chongqing University,
Good Morning! It is a great pleasure to visit Chongqing University with my colleagues from ASEAN. Based in Jakarta, though we sometimes hold activities with Indonesian schools and universities, it is the first time we together come to a Chinese university to meet and talk with teachers and students. I therefore wish to thank Chongqing University for its kind invitation and arrangements of the event. The theme of today's lecture is "the Future of China-ASEAN relations" and I think that fits well with the development of China-ASEAN relations as it is today.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up, the beginning of ASEAN's second jubilee and the 15th anniversary of China-ASEAN Strategic Partnership. In other words, China and ASEAN are both entering a new era. At this critical juncture, we may ask ourselves what kind of future may look like for China-ASEAN relations, and what it may offer to people on both sides. To find out the answer, we may first spend some time looking back on how we have come thus far.
